GPR Veteran Unveils New Memorial
Updated: Dec 12, 2019
A new memorial was unveiled today by Glider Pilot veteran Frank Ashleigh and Parachute Regiment veteran Steve Morgan, in Renkum to commemorate Operation Market Garden. The new monument sits on the edge of Landing Zone X, where gliders landed and paratroopers dropped in September 1944. The area is the site of parachute drops and displays each year, but up until now there was no focal point to commemorate the events that happened there in WWII. Funded by local groups and residents, the new memorial will serve as a reminder of the Battle of Arnhem to all who visit the area.
Frank Ashleigh was brought to Arnhem by the Taxi Charity and the Glider Pilot Regiment Society and joined members and friends of the Society for the full schedule of remembrance events.
The Society also held its own service in the Arnhem-Oosterbeek War Cemetery as well as attending the Army Air Corps Service, the main remembrance service and the Glider Pilot Regiment service in the village of Wolfheze.
Frank told reporters from BBC London "(I will be back next year) and the year after, and the year after that. As long as I am physically able. My heart is here."
