The Glider Pilot Regiment Society
The Glider Pilot Regiment Society of Family, Heritage and Remembrance (UK Registered Charity No. 1184175) was set up in 2017 following the winding down of the Glider Pilot Regimental Association (GPRA). The Society was not intended to replace the GPRA but rather to educate about the history of the regiment and provide a community for Glider Pilot veterans, their relatives and those with a connection to the Regiment.
The purposes of the Glider Pilot Regiment Society are:
1. To educate the public about the history and heritage of the Glider Pilot Regiment (GPR) and its activities during World War II and in post war years, in particular but not exclusively by:
a. cataloguing documentary evidence and recording the oral
histories of those who served in the Regiment;
b. engaging with media, museums and educational institutes;
c. conducting research and sharing the useful results of such
research and sharing of information as appropriate;
2. To promote good citizenship by commemorating the sacrifices of those members of the GPR who died in service during World War II by establishing and maintaining such memorials as shall be thought fit and funding remembrance services and events.
3. To relieve GPR veterans who are in need by reason of their age, ill health or disability or social or financial circumstances or other disadvantage and in the case of bereavement of a veteran, to provide non-financial support to relieve the distress of their families.
We welcome enquiries from anyone seeking information about the Regiment. Our services are free to relatives of Glider Pilots. However, as a charity, we would be grateful for a donation from other enquirers.
Membership of the society is open to veterans of the Glider Pilot Regiment (including those RAF pilots who took part in Operation Varsity) their relatives and anyone who has an interest in the Regiment and its exploits.
Amongst other things, your membership brings with it our magazine/newsletter and the opportunity to attend member-only events, all in the knowledge that you will be supporting our commitment to Heritage and Remembrance.
All memberships are for 12 months from the date of joining.
